FAQS

Here are some of the most asked questions about our Garden and membership. If you have any other questions, feel free to visit us or contact us.

  • 1. How do I become a member of the Byford Glades Community Garden?

To become a member, please email us at bgcgarden@gmail.com expressing your interest. We will send you a membership form and information on the induction process. Membership is open to all, regardless of gardening experience!

  • 2. Are there any fees associated with membership?

Yes, there is an annual membership fee that contributes to the garden's upkeep, communal supplies, and activities. This fee also grants you access to communal bed produce and various member benefits. Please contact us directly for the current fee structure and payment details.

  • 3. Can I rent my own garden plot?

Absolutely! Plot availability varies throughout the year. Members can rent plots to grow their own produce, subject to availability and the completion of an induction session. Contact us for more information on plot sizes, fees, and availability.

  • 4. What are the garden's opening hours?

The garden is open to members from 7am to 8pm daily. We also have specific open days for the wider community, which are announced in advance via email and on our community noticeboard.

  • 5. How can I get involved in garden activities or volunteer?

We welcome and encourage member involvement in various garden tasks, from weeding and composting to participating in busy bees and social events. Check the whiteboard or blackboard on-site for current tasks needing attention, or attend our regular meetings to offer your skills and time.

  • 6. What should I do if I have a concern or conflict in the garden?

We promote a culture of respect and open communication. If you encounter any issues or conflicts, we encourage calm discussion and goodwill to resolve them. Should issues remain unresolved, please bring them to the attention of the BGCG Management Committee, which will work towards a fair resolution in line with our garden guidelines and vows.

ABOUT THE GARDEN

HISTORY

In June 2016 the site (next to Percy Park) was handed over from the developer who used it as a laydown area during the development of the local area. Work began on the Garden thanks to grants from the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, Royalty for Regions and donations from many local sponsors including Bendigo Bank.

With a lot of hard work from local volunteer residents the garden as you see it today took shape.

In 2017 the Garden was incorporated and is now formally managed by its own committee made up of garden members. The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale provided four years of funding to assist with the establishment of the garden until it became self sufficient supportrd by memberships, grants/sponsorships and fund raising events. But the most important thing which makes the gardens function are the volunteers.

ABOUT THE GARDEN

GARDEN BEDS

The garden beds are made from timber sleepers and are lined with plastic sheeting to reduce run-off. All are reticulated using bore water provided by the Shire. Most beds are rented by members so they can grow their own produce.

However, plots 1 & 2 closest to the main shed and also alongside the retainer wall are community beds.

We operate as close as possible to organic and permaculture ideals:

  • Using only organic fertilizers and non-synthetic pest control
  • Manual weed control in beds and surrounding walkways.
  • Only plant seeds and seedlings from approved horticultural suppliers.
